This is my third bag with Popsewing. It was by far the easiest one I have made, requiring 8-10 hours at most. I will acknowledge that the video to this kit is not as helpful as some of the harder bags. The woman moves quickly and does not give as much direction around finishing stitches or other helpful tips. Because I have made other Popsewing kits, I have some good practical tips that I would recommend before making this bag:
1. Follow the video, pausing it as needed. While the video is in Chinese, the subscript tells the length of thread needed for each section. And she does show enough basic saddle stitching to give you a good start. If you are still stuck on saddle stitching, you can look up short videos in English on Youtube that would certainly help.
2. Start and end with extra stitches (surge stitches). This will help protect against the thread "un-sewing" later. To do this double up on the first stitch, making two loops through the same hole. In my pictures, you can see I have two loops through each end hole. There are a variety reasons for doing this, but ultimately it will strengthen the stitching overall. Again, like I said above, you can look up a surge stitch on Youtube as well. That could be helpful.
3. To finish, bring both threads to the backside of the leather to clip. This will mean that each end of the thread will end in a different hole (one hole apart on the same side of the leather). Instead of using glue, I clip and burn the ends of the thread. Once the thread burns down, I tap the burned portion with a blunt end, pushing it into the thread around it. I have used this method on other bags, and I prefer it to the glue method, as it looks cleaner, and frankly it is easier in my opinion.
4. Lastly, I know some had said, the kit did not come with everything you need. If that is the case, you can buy upholstery needles--they work fabulously. Also, I recommend using silicone finger protectors. While they are not necessary on this project, as the sewing moves fairly well, I find that I can move faster if I can push the needle straight into my protected fingers. I simply have more leverage and more tactile ability.
This was such a fun project. Had a blast making it and have recieved so many compliments while wearing it out 😍
I like how everything needed is included. I found the video very easy to follow. I love my new bag! Will I order again? Yes!!
This is such a fun kit for adults. Easy to follow instructions and really fun to make. Highly recommend.
This was a gift. I just presented this to it a few days ago, but have not heard if they have assembled it.
